So with the season over, who do the Wellington Phoenix need to sign to at least enhance their squad for next season?
As it stands, the team have definitely got the following players for next season:
Glen Moss, Andrew Durante (captain), Ben Sigmund, Manny Muscat, Tony Lochead, Jimmy Downey, Leo Bertos, Cameron Lindsay, Paul Ifil, Mirjan Pavlovic, Lucas Pantelis.
The following are still to sign but the club are in talks to sign them up:
Mark Paston, Vince Lia, Dani Sanchez & Alex Smith
Tony Warner, Brent Griffiths, Niko Tsatallios, Nick Ward and Daniel are still in limbo although I am puzzled as to why a quality player like Nick Ward hasn't featured more often for the Phoenix. When he's come on the Phoenix, Ward has actually been quite a decent impact player. I can't understand why we persevere with rubbish like Pavlovic who have given nothing this season - hopefully he'll prove me wrong next season.
Meanwhile, Chris Greenacre could possibly stay on although he is more likely to be involved as a coach rather than as a player.
But who else should the Phoenix sign? The Phoenix need to sign 7 players maximum although they may be happy with 6 and use the academy to fill the last spot. And at least 3 out of Paston, Lia, Sanchez and Smith will be signed up leaving 3-4 players to sign.
On the one hand, with Newcastle and Gold Coast out of the A-League next season, there will be plenty of players looking to sign for clubs. From Newcastle, Kiwi Jeremy Brockie could potentially make a return to a New Zealand professional football team - he played for the now defunct Knights of course, while Englishman Michael Bridges is a proven goalscorer who was unlucky to have been beset by injury in his prime at Leeds.
Newcastle's Nikolai Topor-Stanley is also a quality player to have in defence and plenty of A-League clubs may be hunting him down now that he is available. Could Phoenix rejects who played at the Gold Coast United this season like Rigters and McAllister make a second plea to the Phoenix?
On the other hand, the Phoenix should open up and look to 30-year-old plus somethings playing in England and Scotland's leagues for a striker to support Paul Ifil. I think Ifil clearly played quite a bit and with him getting older, he needs a player of similar class to support him so that he doesn't feel like he has to carry the whole load.
How about former England striker, James Beattie, who is currently playing at Sheffield United, or Kevin Phillips at Blackpool - once a goal machine at Sunderland. There's also Jason Roberts at Reading, Jason Scotland at Ipswich or Aussie Scott McDonald at Middlesbrough?
Midfield also needs to be covered and more creativity could be handy. With Manny Muscat potentially moving into the anchor role, this opens the door for a more creative midfielder. Could the Phoenix tempt Michael McGlinchey back across the ditch if Nick Ward is discarded? Alex Smith could possibly slot in there.
Anyway, there's plenty of time to ponder this silly season for the Phoenix!
What about getting Chris Killen? He may want to return home. It would be great to get a big name signing that people have heard of though.
ReplyDeleteI want Smeltz back to be honest but we probably can't afford him.
It would be good to have a few more All Whites like Michael McGlinchey, Killen and maybe the odd one playing in Europe.
I think Nick Ward, Alex Smith, Vinny Lia and Paston are all good enough to be resigned, but I don't rate Daniel. I wonder if Paston would want to ride the pine.
Topor - Stanley not only has a great name, but is a good player and would go well in defence with Durante and Siggy.
We do need a quality midfielder though to replace Brown. Hard to say if McGlinchey is that man.
David, you need to correct your article. Lucas Pantelis suffered an season ending injury during pre-season. So how could he have given nothing when he hasn't played. This is basic stuff.
DeleteDone. Thanks for noting that. Still think Pavlovic is garbage.
