It is now widely known that former French superstar and current UEFA boss, Michel Platini, is quite keen to spread EURO 2020 around the UEFA member nations instead of traditionally selecting one host nation. Platini said that the present difficult economic climate in Europe make it unfair for one or two nations to shoulder the costs of hosting the tournament which will be expanded from 16 to 24 teams for the next edition in France in 2016.
The EUROs - European Championships if you will - will also turn 60 in 2020 and a Europe wide tournament would be an apt way to celebrate this milestone.
It has to be said that Europe has really now become the United States of Europe given that the borderless Schengen zone now extends all the way to the edges of Russia and the Ukraine and that most of the EU states (unfortunately) now use the euro. Therefore, it is pretty apt that the tournament is held throughout united Europe.
Europe is really the United States of Europe now. |

Interesting idea. Platini is a bit mad though!
ReplyDeleteCan't see it eventuating in reality but I guess anything is possible.
Would investors like it commercially though?
Would you also lose that feeling of a big tournament if every nation effectively held one game etc?
By the way...you missed out my team's stadum...the Emirates!
Nice post.
