To be honest, every weekend is a big weekend of sport, but in terms of relevance and teams I care about, this weekend is fairly important.
The obvious main course is the semifinal match on Sunday night at 9pm between the All Blacks and Australia. Terrified rather than excited currently describes how I feel about this game at the mo and I'm afraid as the day draws closer, I may feel a bit more nervous.
But first...
The other big trans Tasman rugby match on Sunday is the rugby league test between the Kiwis and Kangaroos in Newcastle. It may be a warm-up game before the Four Nations tournament in England later in the month, but there's always plenty of feeling between the two sides.
Then...
There's that other semifinal between Wales and France. It should be a terrific affair between two of the Northern Hemisphere's most attacking sides. I dare say Wales are a better team than England were and will provide a far sterner test for Les Bleus who have historically played only one good game in the knockout stages.
Also....
There's always a whole round of club football fixtures in most parts of the world.
The Wellington Phoenix play their first home game against the Newcastle Jets at 4:30pm on Sunday; the first of 3 trans-Tasman clashes (I've already mentioned the other two). The Nix got a decent 1-1 draw on the Gold Coast and were unlucky not to have come home with all 3 points. They still need a striker though and hopefully the new consortium can provide them with funds to find that 20-goals-a-season striker.
In England, Liverpool host Manchester United in a match that is always hugely anticipated but rarely delivers on the pitch. Nevertheless, the history and heritage of the two sides always make this a compelling fixture on the English football calendar.
Another good derby on the weekend is the Black Country derby between the Baggies and the Wolves. Both sides are looking for a win to give their campaigns a kick start so this could be a very dour game or an 8-goal thriller.
Formula 1 heads to Korea with its champion already crowned. Nevertheless, Sebastian Vettel will be out to continue to smash records. The Monty Python loving German (they're more common than you think) needs 2 more wins to break the record for the most wins in a season. And it would be the icing on the cake of a thoroughly dominant season.
And then there's the NFL, the baseball pennant races should conclude this weekend.
What a weekend of sport. GO ALL BLACKS! (and Liverpool and Kiwis!)
