5 Greatest Super Bowls of the Last 22 Years

Ah the Super Bowl. The first really big spectacle of every sporting year. But how many of them have been truly memorable? Here are 5 of the most memorable Super Bowls since 1990..

Super Bowl XXXVIII - Patriots 32 Panthers 29
The Patriots were huge favourites to win in Houston's swanky new stadium but John Fox's men didn't bother to read the script and a huge defensive effort ensured the Panthers were in right till the end. Adam Vinateri may have had a shocker with the boot early on but nailed the winning field goal with seconds left on the clock to give the Patriots and Tom Brady their 2nd Super Bowl success in 3 years.

Super Bowl XXXII - Broncos 31 Packers 24
This was memorable for John Elway's first - and long overdue - Super Bowl win and what a way to get it. The Packers were the defending Super Bowl champions going to San Diego for this game with Brett Favre at the peak of his powers. Elway ran the Packers defence riot - even running in for a touchdown himself. While Terrell Davis lost sight briefly after a big hit during the game, the Broncos defence and offence did not and ensured the legend would own at least one Super Bowl ring.

Super Bowl XXXVI - Patriots 20 Rams 17
The Greatest Show on Turf went on the road to New Orleans to take on the Patriots who had scrapped through rather controversially and with their then third-string quarterback, a Mr Tom Brady. Third-string he was no more as the Pats defence muscled up in a Super Bowl for the first time ever. Two high quality teams left it right to the death but Brady's familiar two minute drills got the Pats into field goal range. Vinateri stepped up to kick the winning goal and earn the Patriots their first ever Super Bowl title.

Super Bowl XXXIV - Rams 23 Titans 16
Memorable for the touchdown that wasn't. The Greatest Show on Turf was matched by the heroics of the late Steve McNair and the Titans in their first Super Bowl appearance since the original Houston Oilers franchise moved to the Music City. As the seconds ticked down in Atlanta, McNair led the Titans on a heroic drive that would finish one yard short of a touchdown; the tackle by Mike Jones on wide receiver Kevin Dyson was the difference on the very last play of the game. Probably the most epic finish to a Super Bowl until 2008.

Super Bowl XLII - Giants 17 Patriots 14
Memorable for the touchdown that was. The Patriots were just one game from the perfect season but the Giants had turned up for this game and kept the Patriots offence to only 14 points. Up stepped Eli Manning who struggled away from the vicious Patriots defence, to throw the greatest ball of his career yet to David Tyree who caught it famously with his head. It meant the Giants were in the red zone and only needed Plaxico Burress to catch the ball for the winning touchdown with only seconds left on the clock. Probably the greatest upset in Super Bowl history.
