Well even a Goodwillie couldn't quite save Blackburn's season-long impotence at the death as the deserved, inevitable and expected relegation from the Premier League after 10 seasons ended ignominously against their rivals, Wigan who stayed up at their expense courtesy of that 1-0 win at Ewood Park.
As it is, Blackburn Rovers remain the only Premier League champions to have been relegated - they were relegated at the end of the 1998-99 season of course, but came back to the Premier League for the 2001-02 season.
So can Rovers make a quick return to the Premier League or will they languish in the Championship like Middlesbrough, Derby, Leicester, Nottingham Forest & Leeds?
It all comes down to what happens in the summer transfer window. The positive thing is that the side as it is quite average anyway meaning that the players won't really be in demand bar Yakubu, possibly Paul Robinson or one of the Olsson twins. So if that team stays together along with a few signings from Championship sides, Blackburn could possibly make a swift return to the top flight.
I think given the circumstances, Steve Kean, has actually done a superlative job with the limited resources that he has and I think he will do well in the Championship.
Really the only way out of this mire is for someone to buy the club from Venky's who appear to know diddlysquat about football. I feel sorry for Blackburn fans really who thought they had established themselves as a Premier League club under the likes of Graeme Souness, Mark Hughes and even Sam Allardyce briefly.
For now though, Rovers fans probably should console themselves by watching replays of the 1994/95 Premier League winning season on DVD.
Change incompetence to impotence in the first line and you've got a great opening to a post!
