Ryan Nelsen to Tottenham Hotspur

In the most stunning football news involving a New Zealander in a long time yet, All Whites captain, Ryan Nelsen, appears to have sealed a very last minute transfer to high flying Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur.

Nelsen, who moved to Blackburn Rovers from DC United in 2005, will supplant Wynton Rufer in terms of Kiwi playing for the most illustrious club in Europe.

Nelsen's move was a surprise given most of the attention was on Chris Samba. I myself am a bit stunned by this but am now quite stoked. Nelsen does have a massive task up ahead to usurp the likes of Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Younes Kaboul and Assou-Ekotu from the starting lineup - although given King's injuries, his chances are quite high of starting in the centre back role. Sebastian Bassong and Vedran Corluka have also moved on so Nelsen's chances of partnering captain Michael Dawson at the back are quite high.

It has also come to my attention that Nelsen's contract was apparently terminated by Blackburn Rovers - another sign of a club in total disarray - even though Nelsen was still turning out for the reserves. Once this came to light, Nelsen's agent must have quickly alerted Spurs manager, Harry Redknapp, of the availability of a decent and experienced defender.

Could Nelsen be the final piece in what could potentially be a title-winning season at White Hart Lane? Only time will tell. But to Spurs fans, remember Nelsen's performances at the 2010 World Cup.
