This is what they're riding for - well this and the million dollars from Emirates |
Fiorente has won the 2013 Melbourne Cup!!
Fiorente beat out Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos in perfect conditions at Flemington to win the race that stops two nations.
It's that time of the year again!
Yes, it's the first Tuesday of November, and time for the race that stops two nations.
Yes, it's time for the Melbourne Cup and this year it's more international than ever - in fact, it's gotten to the point where most of the field comes from overseas rather than from the traditional breeding grounds of Australia and New Zealand.
It's set to be a hot and dry track with sunny weather predicted on Cup Day - so it should be a very fast race.
One horse I'm intrigued about is Brown Panther from the UK. Brown Panther is owned by former England and Liverpool striker, Michael Owen but it's not just football sentiment that gets him my pick - he has settled pretty well and Michael Owen in his retirement is a very well respect horse breeder having gotten his skills from former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Dunaden is probably the favourite having won last year from behind but this being a horse race anything can happen - which is why the office sweepstakes are pretty popular along with the visits to the TAB.

Indeed, this is the biggest day not just for the TAB but for the costume and suit hire places. Other than for the Wellington Sevens - and weddings - this is the other event in Australasia where people make the effort to dress up and it's definitely a contest in Australia for the celebrities to see who's the best dressed.
Moreover, it's quite a fun way to mark the middle of spring and the home straight to summer!
Anyway, good luck tomorrow - just don't get too upset with the sweepstakes - it's just a horse race and for 364 other days of the year, you don't really bother with horse races.
