2014 World Cup Preview - A Look at Group C!

Nope he won't be in Brazil.

Group C might not be one of the so-called groups of death in the World Cup but there is a bit of intrigue in this group and given Colombia are missing one of the best strikers in the world, their status as seeded team is a bit shaky in this group. All 4 have the potential to make the 2nd round but how far can they go?

Colombia
Squad -
GK - Faryd Mondragon, David Ospina, Camilo Vargas
DF - Mario Yepes, Juan Camila Zuniga, Pablo Armero, Cristian Zapata, Carlos Valdes, Santiago Arias, Eder Alvarez Balanta
MF - Fredy Guarin, Abel Aguilar, Carlos Sanchez, Aldo Leao Ramirez, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado, James Rodriguez, Alexander Mejia, Juan Fernando Quintero
FW - Victor Ibarbo, Teofilo Gutierrez, Jackson Martinez, Adrian Ramos, Carlos Bacca

Star player - James Rodriguez - Monaco's Colombian influence continued despite the loss of talisman striker, Radamel Falcao. Rodriguez kept Monaco's push for Champions League football going and established himself as a man to watch.

Prognosis - With Falcao, Colombia might have fancied their chances of going into a quarterfinal meet with Brazil. Without him, they should get there but their chances will diminish. They should still go through on top of the group on their home continent.

Japan
Squad -
GK - Eji Kawashima, Shusaku Nishikawa, Shuichi Gonda
DF - Atsuto Uchida, Gotuku Sakai, Yuto Nagatomo, Masato Morishige, Yasuyuki Konno, Masahiko Inoha, Hiroki Sakai, Maya Yoshida
MF - Keisuke Honda, Yasuhito Endo, Hiroshi Kiyotake, Shinji Kagawa, Toshihiro Aoyama, Hotaru Yamaguchi, Makoto Hasebe,
FW - Shinji Okazaki, Yoichiro Kakitani, Yoshito Okubo, Yuya Osako, Manabu Saito

Star player - Yuto Nagatomo - Inter's Japanese import has been in stunning form at fullback - one of the best fullbacks in the world at the moment. Superb at the back and great going forward. A player to watch.

Prognosis - An underrated force - a good, hardworking squad with some talented players of genuine world class. They will back their chances in a fairly favourable group. Heat and inexperience playing in the cauldrons of South America could work against them though. Close 3rd.

Cote d'Ivoire
Squad -
GK - Boubacar Barry, Sayouba Mande, Sylvain Gbohouo
DF - Didier Zokora, Kolo Toure, Arthur Boka, Sol Bamba, Serge Aurier, Ousmane Viera, Constant Djakpa, Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro,
MF - Yaya Toure, Cheick Tiote, Didier Ya Konan, Max Gradel, Serey Die, Mathis Bolly, Ismael Diomande
FW - Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Gervinho, Wilfried Bony, Giovanni Sio

Star player - Wilfried Bony - Swansea's big signing last summer has been superb in his first season in English football, standing out in a side that just about stayed up. With Drogba in the last years of a grand career, Bony is the Elephants' present and future. A big tournament could see him leave South Wales.

Prognosis - This is possibly the golden generation's best and last chance of finally making the 2nd round and in climate similar to home, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, et al. should be regarded as a good chance to do so.

Greece
Squad -
GK - Orestis Karnezis, Panagiotis Glyos, Stefanos Kapino
DF - Giannis Maniatis, Giorgos Tzavellas, Kostas Manolas, Vangelis Moras, Loukas Vyntra, Vasilis Torosidis, Jose Holebas, Sokratis Papasthathopoulos
MF - Alexandros Tziolis, Panagiotis Kone, Giorgos Karagounis, Lazaros Christoduolopoulos, Giannis Fetfatzidis, Andreas Samaris, Panagiotis Tachtsidis
FW - Giorgos Samaras, Kostas Mitroglou, Dimitris Salpingidis, Theofanis Gekas

Star player - Ioannis Fetfatzidis - One of the stars in Genoa's surprise season, Fetfatzidis is a wanted man in Europe. He is a very talented and skilful winger - he made history by being the most expensive transfer from the Greek Superleague. Fetfatzidis will be key to Greece's creativity.

Prognosis - They have a chance in such an open group and their style of football has improved since they bored everyone to EURO 2004 glory. A lot of aging stars though and not enough quality to make it out of the group though.
