2014 World Cup Preview - Cup Team '14?

The World Cup kicks off tonight in Brazil after weeks of anticipation when the Selecao host mercurial Croatia in Sao Paulo.

While it's far too early to be thinking about team of the tournament, it's still worth a bit of a flutter at tipping who will star at this tournament.

Here's my team to star at this World Cup! (4-2-1-3)

GOALKEEPER -
Joe Hart, England - The Three Lions face a mammoth task to qualify from a group featuring Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica and will be heavily reliant on their man at the back in goal. Joe Hart has bounced back from a wobbly start to the Premier League season and is in fine form. He could very well be the cutting edge for England to progress in this tournament.

DEFENDERS -
Leighton Baines, England - Having ousted Ashley Cole from the England starting XI, the Everton left back will be keen to show that he is up there with one of the best fullbacks in the world.

Thiago Silva, Brazil - While Brazil have a much vaunted attack, defence will be key and Brazil are blessed to have Paris St Germain's rock at the back. Not only that, he is captain.

Gerard Pique, Spain - With Puyol gone, Pique is pretty much Mr Dependable for Spain - goes up and scores goals but can sit back to allow the more attack minded Sergio Ramos to roam forward. Just shades Ramos defensively.

Marcelo, Brazil - Came on as a sub for Real Madrid in the Champions League Final and made a huge difference, the best right back in the world will be keen to make an impact at home.

CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS -
Phillip Lahm, Germany - Shifted from left back to defensive midfield, Lahm has taken the move with ease and this could very well see him play a bigger role than he has had in the past. Could be a masterstroke for the Germans.

Javier Mascherano, Argentina - In the autumn of his career age wise, but very much in his prime, Messi will need his Barca teammate to be on song if Argentina are to finally be contenders.

ATTACKING MIDFIELDER -
Oscar, Brazil - A nation's hopes pretty much lie on Neymar and Oscar. Oscar has deservedly become the heart of the attack after a fine start to his career.

FORWARDS -
Lionel Messi, Argentina - Surely this has to be Messi's time. If it is, he has to be a shoe-in for team of the tournament.

Neymar, Brazil - Has a nation on his shoulders. Should have a good tournament back on home soil.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal - Best player in the world? Had a break to rest his legs due to the tendinitis but came back roaring in a friendly against Ireland. Will be vital for Portugal to be a contender.
