As if the Highlanders haven't lost enough players already - Colin Slade, Lima Sopoaga, John Hardie gone for the season, Nick Crosswell out for 6 weeks - there is set to be more bad news for the slightly beleaguered high flyers of the Super Rugby competition.
All Black Jimmy Cowan is set to play for Gloucester at the end of the Super rugby competition according to reports from the UK. He is set to replace Scottish international, Rory Lawson, at the English giants and given he is no longer first choice halfback at the Highlanders and at danger of losing his spot in the All Blacks, the move probably makes perfect sense for the 30-year-old Southlander.
Cowan was superb at his prime and was easily the best halfback in the country but is clearly on the wane and with plenty of young talented halfbacks snapping at his aging heels, Cowan's chances of being more prolific in New Zealand rugby appear to be diminishing. It's clear Aaron Smith is now number 1 in the deep south and will probably take Cowan's spot in the All Blacks later this year.
All the best, Jimmy. Thanks for the memories. Just be careful - Gloucester isn't quite like Stuart Street in Dunedin. I wouldn't leave my top button down if I were you.
