Midweek Football Wrap

I love midweek football. I love being able to turn on the alerts on my iPhone's Eurosport app and get the latest score updates from all the Champions League, Europa League and Football League games on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The Champions League round robin hit its halfway point this week with some big guns getting big results. The most notable one was Manchester City's last minute win against Villarreal. It meant the blue side of Manchester still has hope of making it to the 2nd round out of their group of death which features teams from the 4 best leagues in Europe. They play the return leg in Villarreal next time and will be looking for another 3 points which would probably all but knock out the Yellow Submarine.

Meanwhile the other Manchester side struggled to beat a determined Galati side playing in the new national stadium in Bucharest, requiring 2 penalties to keep pace with surprise leaders, Benfica. Arsenal's last gasp win in Marseille and Chelsea's thumping of Genk gave themselves room at the top of their groups, while Real Madrid and Barcelona look like they will be right there in the mix.

In the Championship, Middlesbrough's unbeaten season ended against Nottingham Forest who are now managed by Steve Cotterill. Leicester also continue to keep pace with the front runners with a 2-0 win over struggling Watford.

Anyway more football tomorrow - this time the Europa League.
