England v Scotland - 3 Classics from the Past

One of football's great rivalries will be revived this Wednesday at Wembley Stadium when England hosts their neighbours from north of the border. It will be the first time that the Scots and English have played each other since the EURO 2000 playoff series in 1999 and a lot has changed since then.

Rangers aren't even in Scotland's top flight anymore due to financial woes

Jordan Rhodes is Scotland's best player right now

English football is clearly leaps and bounds ahead of Scottish football now - national team and domestic league, with the Scottish Premiership a step far too late in catching up with the world's best league, the English Premier League.

Scotland 3-2 Holland - when Scots could be considered world champions
Gone are the days when Scottish footballers had the talent to be world champions with the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Brazil. Nowadays, the best Scottish footballers are often found in the English Football Championship, if not the Scottish Premiership.

Despite this, expect the likes of Jordan Rhodes, Craig Mikhail-Smith and Charlie Adam to play like world champions when they come to Wembley on Wednesday night, out to show that even with the Scots effectively out of World Cup qualification again, they are still a relevant side in world football.

Here are 3 great classics from past England v Scotland encounters -

1999, England 0 Scotland 1

Both England and Scotland had underwhelming campaigns as they attempted to qualify for the European Championships of 2000 in Belgium and Holland, and as luck would have it, they were drawn together in the dreaded playoff series.

England won the first leg, 2-0 at Hampden Park thanks to a brace by Paul Scholes. They were expected to take the second leg at Wembley easily but Don Hutchinson's 39th minute goal for Scotland meant a long and nervy wait for England who just held on to qualify for EURO 2000. While Scotland were eliminated, it was a night that Scottish fans would long remember.

After all, it was the last time England played Scotland, and the last time they played at the old Wembley Stadium.

1996, England 2 Scotland 0

Football was coming home and this was the fixture to watch in the group stages of EURO 1996. England and Scotland had drawn their first two fixtures of EURO 1996 meaning this was a must-win for both sides.

English fans booed out the Scottish anthem and the tension was inevitable in a terse first half. Jamie Redknapp came on as a sub and changed the game for England as they won 2-0 thanks to goals to Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne.

England went on to beat the Netherlands in their last group game and fell short of a home Final when they lost on penalties to Germany (again). Scotland went out of the group stages on goal difference.

1967, England 2 Scotland 3

The most famous victory in Scottish football history. England were the reigning world champions and were at home at Wembley Stadium in their annual series against the Scots.

In a thrilling game, Scotland were 2-0 up thanks to Denis Law, before England pulled one back to make it 2-1. Jim McCallog got the winner for Scotland who held on despite World Cup hero, Geoff Hurst getting another back for England.

The Scots were unofficial world champions for a night.
