New Zealand's Greatest Woman Athlete?
Lydia Ko's form in the women's golf game has many experts tipping her for future greatness. Already a winner on the tour as an amateur, 16 year old Ko missed out on the Evian Championship and thus winning her first major. Surely her turning pro is a matter of when, not if.
How does Lydia Ko compare to New Zealand's other great woman athletes?
Here are 4 others -
Valerie Adams
Definitely currently our greatest woman athlete competing right now - a double Olympic champion and four time world champion in shot put, Adams is only 28 and in her sport, she hasn't quite hit her peak.
Barbara Kendall
Once our greatest woman Olympian and one of our longest competing Olympians, Barbara Kendall's exploits which resulted in Olympic medals of each colour in 3 games with the boardsail helped to maintain New Zealand's proud heritage in the sport.
Georgina/Caroline Evers-Swindell
The greatest women's rowing pair ever to row for New Zealand. The Evers-Swindell twins dominated rowing to an extent that is being seen right now with Bond and Murray. Their legendary status was sealed in the 2008 Olympics when they won gold despite being written off after poor form in the buildup.
Irene van Dyk
Ok, she might not be considered a Kiwi having first represented her home country, South Africa, but she has spent enough time playing for the silver fern to be considered a true Kiwi great. Still going strong in her 40s in the new era of semi professional netball.
