Bauer Watch - TdF Day 5

The fastest man in the world finally got his first stage win of this year's Tour de France in the streets of Marseille, holding off former Sky team-mate, Edvald Bosson Hagen and fellow green jersey contender, Peter Sagan at the finish. A massive crash wiped out much of the peloton with 2 km to go.

It is Cavendish's 24th stage victory at the Tour de France and he is now one behind Andre Leducq, 4 behind Bernard Hinault and 10 behind the great Edy Merckx - you wouldn't bet on him at least tying with Hinault by time we get to Paris at least.

Thus, Aussie Simon Gerrans is still in the yellow jersey ahead of team-mates Darryl Impey and Marcel Albasini as Australia's Orica-Greenedge continued its recent golden run atop the standings. It remains to be seen if the newcomers can maintain this pace with plenty of the Tour still to come and Team Sky still leaving its best in reserve.

Jack Bauer finished 172nd, 10 minutes 8 seconds behind the leaders after being hampered by the crash. He is currently classified 185th overall some 37 minutes 57 seconds behind Gerrens.

Fellow Kiwi Greg Henderson finished 26th in the stage, given the same time as the leader after being caught up in the crash - he is 154th overall 27 minutes 30 seconds behind Gerrens.
