Jenson #Button Set for 250th #F1 Grand Prix Start!

It only seems like yesterday when I remember Jenson Button as a young 20 year old lumbering up to Sir Frank Williams' garage in 2000 to test one of the knight's F1 cars.

Button looked like he had just come out of high school with his slicked hair and boyish Tony Blair looks. He had just raced to 2nd behind fellow Brit, Darren Manning in the prestigious Macau F3 Grand Prix and was competing with Brazilian F3000 ace, Bruno Junquiera to be Ralf Schumacher's teammate for 2000 in the newly formed Williams-BMW partnership.

Junquiera and Manning have now disappeared without a trace and Button went onto become the 5th youngest driver at the time to start a grand prix when he lined up 21st on the grid for the 2000 Australian Grand Prix - he would eventually briefly become the youngest driver ever to earn a F1 point with 6th place in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Initial doubts over whether Button would be able to cope with F1 at such a young age and having jumped F3000 to get to the top echelon of motorsport were soon dispelled as Button finished 8th on the table with 12 points - half of what teammate Ralf got.

Alas Jenson Button was a trend-setter as the likes of Fernando Alonso and current world champion, Sebastian Vettel would snatch the youngest ever records from the wonder boy from Frome. Indeed, the following year, a certain Mr Kimi Raikkonen would jump from Formula Renault to a drive with Sauber and we know what happened with him.

14 years on, Jenson Button has been there, done it all, qualified on pole, won 15 races (his first after 50 attempts coming at the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix - see clip below as James Allen experiences a climax as Button crosses the line), and even become F1 world champion in the year 2009.

That 2009 season pretty much sums up Jenson Button's career - a long roller coaster ride that was definitely worth it, with Button almost out of F1 at the start of the season when Honda suddenly pulled out of F1. It was only for Ross Brawn's intervention that Button would continue driving in F1, let alone win the championship in a car very reminiscent of James Hunt's Heskell - sponsorless yet highly competitive.

Since then, Button is now in that most British of teams, McLaren where he'll probably end his career, now engaged and on the verge of his 250th grand prix - only 5 behind former Renault teammate, Jarno Trulli, 6 behind long-time record holder for most GPs, Riccardo Patrese and 75 behind former BAR/Brawn teammate, Rubens Barrichello.

Yet he still looks the same as he did back in 2000 when the hype was all on this young guy making his mark on F1.

I guess Jenson Button and All Blacks captain, Richie McCaw are not that dissimilar in many ways - both made their debuts at the top level at such a young age, that they have so much experience even at an age where you wouldn't deem to be past it - both are 34 this year - and could still play more games, race more races for years to come.

Yes the battle and age scars are more evident now, but you wouldn't really say that they look old.

And just like McCaw, Button has definitely earned his right to be considered one of Formula 1's greats. Not only has he reached the pinnacle of the sport, he got there the slow, hard way. Most importantly, on his day when the car suited him, his driving was up there with the greats - and that day was very often.

And it couldn't have happened to a nicer more down-to-earth bloke than Jenson - whose hugs shared with his late father, John and his blunt opinions and observations have gained him lots of fans.

Congratulations Jenson! Been a pleasure following your career right from the start!

  1. Brazilian Grand Prix is a Formula One championship race which is currently held at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace from 13-15 Nov 2015. This circuit is one of the few F1 racetracks which run anticlockwise, which combined with its high altitude, makes it one of the most challenging circuits for drivers.
