Raul Set for Wellington Phoenix?

Real Madrid and Spain's legendary striker, Raul, has confirmed he will leave Bundesliga club, Schalke at the end of this season. The 34-year-old joined Schalke in the summer of 2010 after a 16 year career at Real Madrid where he was considered the greatest thing since sliced bread.

During his time at Madrid, Raul Gonzalez Blanco played alongside greats like Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo (the Brazilian striker), Claude Makelele & David Beckham. He helped guide Schalke to the semifinals of the Champions League.

So what is the next challenge for Raul? Rumour has it that Raul is set to leave Europe and may be heading for the MLS or Hyundai A-League.

In fact, Raul could be linked to the Wellington Phoenix as the Phoenix want to bolster their striking options with Chris Greenacre set to hang up his boots and focus on his coaching career. Raul could possibly form a dangerous partnership with Paul Ifil up front. And with Dani Sanchez also at the club, Raul would certainly have a Spanish speaking person in the locker room.

And Raul would score goals with ease in the A-League you'd think, having spent his time in the Bundesliga and La Liga.

Ok, the Phoenix probably aren't quite in the line for Raul's services - he'd probably go to an MLS club or a club in Qatar or China.

  1. You're dreaming if you think we can afford him. It would be amazing though!

  2. Remember when West Ham signed Tevez and Mascherano? But you're right, Ifill is our marquee player so we can't have Raul. And Rich Boyd also alluded to the fact that our system doesn't suit Raul. We'd probably go for a target man - James Beattie, Dave Kitson, Emile Heskey maybe.
