Cyclone Lusi Set to Affect NZ Sport this Weekend!
A big storm is set to hit New Zealand this weekend. Cyclone Lusi has already caused a bit of havoc in the Pacific Islands and is now heading towards the top of the North Island bringing with blustery northerlies and torrential rain. It could potentially move as far south as the Cook Strait and the central North Island.
A storm is never really timely but from a sports perspective, this storm could not be any more not timely with 3 Super Rugby home games on this weekend and a Warriors game at home in Auckland.
The Warriors play the Dragons at 5pm on Saturday at Eden Park in Auckland - a game that in normal circumstances would be a sellout but could potentially be placed in doubt if weather conditions are deemed to severe and civil authorities want people to stay indoors.
The Chiefs also host the Stormers at 7:30pm on Friday night in Hamilton while the Hurricanes are due to host the Cheetahs at 4:35pm on Saturday afternoon in Wellington - a game that the organizers would have hoped would be played under sunny conditions so that more punters would come along and boost attendances which have been on the downturn for home Hurricanes games.
The other home NZ Super Rugby game is in Dunedin and indoors - the Highlanders v Force game could be the only game in NZ played in fine conditions.
It's not often that professional sport in NZ is postponed because of natural conditions - the Hurricanes v Crusaders game was cancelled and points shared between the two sides as it was considered too soon after the Christchurch earthquake. However, there is potential that games might be postponed if it was considered a hazard to the public for people to be attending their footie matches this weekend due to the adverse weather conditions.
Oh well, fingers crossed here! Stay safe New Zealand! I'm (not) Jim Hickey!
