Blues or Chiefs - Where Should Sonny Bill Williams Go?

It is the biggest question right now. And it's not if Sonny Bill Williams returns to New Zealand rugby next season - it appears a given now with an NRL Grand Final win under SBW's belt - but rather where he plays his rugby next season.

Yes, Sonny Bill may have made a big U-turn and decided to represent New Zealand in rugby league this October/November in the United Kingdom - and taken a big chunk of any pre-season training he was due to have with the Super Rugby team of his choice - but he is still very much New Zealand rugby's most wanted man and any special dispensation will be made for him.

And it won't seem so silly or biased. After all, SBW has already proven his prowess at the 15 man code - a Rugby World Cup and Super Rugby winners medal is testament to his amazing athletic abilities.

So where will SBW be playing his rugby next year?

The two most viable options appear to be the Blues and Chiefs, with the Chiefs favourites, given his knowledge and familiarity with the team structure, environment and coach, Dave Rennie.

SBW will definitely fit in the Chiefs environment like a glove and will no doubt boost the Chiefs' prospects of making it three in a row - only the Crusaders have achieved that back in 1998-2000. The only people to miss out might very well be soon-to-be Counties Manukau teammate, Bundee Aki.

Plus he has won a Super Rugby title with them and wouldn't mind helping them finish their hat-trick of titles next season.

But what about the Blues?

There are a few attractive draw cards to get SBW playing his rugby in Auckland rather than Hamilton - his family is based in Auckland, and his Kiwis team-mate, Benji Marshall is also there, and under John Kirwan and Graham Henry, it appears to be an up and coming team with the likes of Steven Luatua and Charles Piutau leading the chase. Plus with Rene Ranger playing in Montpellier from next week onwards, they definitely will need a midfielder of some calibre at the Blues, i.e. SBW.

While SBW would like to play for the Chiefs, he has a reputation of seeking a new challenge and the Blues could very well fit the mould that SBW is after.

So watch this space in a few weeks time. And who knows, the Chiefs and Blues Super Rugby camps could very well be welcoming a double Rugby (union and league) World Cup winner come November.

    1. If he comes back to Rugby it will definitely be The Chiefs, Not The Blues. He's already met with The chief's Bosses yesterday in Sydney.
