Who is the Highlanders Big Signing?

This week is set to be a red letter week in New Zealand.

On Wednesday, the government will announce the share price for the Meridian Energy shares that were offered to the public earlier this month.

Then, on Thursday, the Highlanders will announce a big signing at midday.

So who will it be? Here are my 3 best guesses -

1.Ihaia West

Still on the periphery of Super Rugby franchises at this stage but is he really a big signing? In the eyes of devoted New Zealand rugby followers, yes, particularly after this season's ITM Cup where he starred for Hawkes Bay as they took the Shield off Otago - in front of Jamie Joseph probably - and made the Final of the Championship. Ihaia West would be a good option at first five especially with Colin Slade now at the Crusaders.

2.Dominic Bird

With Luke Romano and Sam Whitelock at the Crusaders, the All Blacks' latest lock, Dominic Bird will probably have to move elsewhere to start each game and ensure he's in the running for the All Blacks. The Highlanders could be his best option where he could start with the experienced Brad Thorn and provide a formidable lineout option. The Highlanders would be a good option for the Canterbury born Bird.

3.James O'Connor

Once the Wallabies' brightest star, James O'Connor is now not even contracted to the Australian Rugby Union but can still represent the Wallabies if he stays in Australia. Mind you, perhaps, James O'Connor may consider a break from international rugby to rebuild his reputation and an inviting opportunity to fill the hole at first five left by Colin Slade who has gone to the Crusaders. O'Connor is a talented player but has had his issues with discipline and Dunedin could offer O'Connor the opportunity

Others? How about Sergio Sanchez or Juan Martin Hernandez, Argentina's first fives? We'll have to wait till Thursday!
